SIMSBURY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Phelps Tavern Museum & Homestead
Research Archives Use
As of June 2005
The Simsbury
Historical Society’s Research Archives is an active collection that
is currently being re-housed and new finding aids are being prepared. This
makes material unavailable to drop-in researchers. All access is currently
by appointment only. Many inquiries can be handled through email.
Registration
All users must produce a photo id and complete a registration form before
they can use any materials from the Archives.
Access
Researchers are encouraged to fill out a preliminary research request form
for the Archives for telephone or email responses. Click
here for form to mail or email.
There is no public access to the stacks. The rarity or condition of material
may also preclude researchers from viewing it. Staff will conduct research
according to their available time
.
Assistance
A well-prepared researcher with a specific topic or area of research will
be able to make the best use of the materials housed in the archives collections.
Research requests may be left at the Visitor Services Desk for the archival
staff at anytime using the pre-printed form or requests may be sent via email
archives@simsburyhistory.org.
They will be answered as time allows. Researchers with a publication deadline
should indicate it on their request.
General surveys of a particular family name can be long and frustrating since
only one item may be accessed at a time.
Finding Aids
Finding aids are being revised and created in anticipation of future on-line
accessibility. Earlier versions of inventories and databases can be searched
by staff only. Box lists may be available to researchers at the archival staff’s
discretion.
